Practical silo repair method

Harnessing our rope-access capabilities, Citi-Con offers a significantly faster, more cost-effective and practical method of repairing silos.

A case in point is the extensive silo roof repairs that we recently completed for this leading food producer. This, while working to a very tight deadline and budget, allowing for very little scope for error throughout the three-week contractual period.

The repairs involved extensive preparation, including removing layers of torch-on waterproofing membranes placed on top of one another. Because they were incompatible, there were major adhesion issues and problems such as blistering and eventual premature failure, potentially exposing the contents inside the silos to water and other contaminants.

Using mechanical wire brushing, we stripped the damaged waterproofing membranes until we reached the screed.

It was then repaired and primed with StonCor Africa’s Prostruct 610/601, a modified polymer waterproofing mortar that promotes adhesion between screeds.

Thereafter, a new screed was block brushed and levelled using a cement mix that was optimised with 610/601 primer, and then sealed with two coats of Stoncor 680FR, a high-performance liquid resin.
